Common planning ranges are 3–6 months for stable income and up to 12 for variable income or higher uncertainty. There is no single correct answer for everyone.
What counts as essential
Include costs you would still need if income paused temporarily — housing, utilities, food, insurance, minimum debt payments, and similar necessities.
